Coming back to the office from vacation can be a stressful experience. Just a few days ago you were enjoying your vacation and today, you are busy trying to catch up with emails in your inbox and other pending issues. Instantly, you might like going for another a vacation. However, it doesn’t have to be that hard. There are certain tips that if you follow them they might make your back-to-work process much easier. Here are some of them.
1. Start Early With Old Tasks
It is important to start with old tasks first and catch up with what you left pending as they might need immediate attention t. you will have enough time to tackle newer assignments and tasks after clearing out old ones. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed with too many things to do.
2. Prepare Your To-Do List
After you have been away for a while, you will surely have a lot of things to do. Then jot down a to-do list by order of priority. It is important to have a clear idea of the week ahead and a list of what you can tackle day by day. It will help to organize your thoughts and make you feel more prepared.
3. Clean and Prioritise Your Inbox
You may find hundreds of emails on your inbox after you return to work. But this does not mean you have to respond to all of them at once. You can figure out the system to answer the most important ones first and then return to the others later. Avoid reading and responding to each email at the same time. You can choose to start with emails that were sent as soon as you left for your holidays and end up answering the recently received ones. Or you can choose to answer the important clients first and then come to others later when you are less occupied.
4. Take Quick Breaks Throughout Your Day
Going into full work-mode without any breaks can cause burnout. You might not be able to sustain attention on one task for an extended period of time and end up being less productive. Remind yourself to take a quick break after a few hours of working on one task. You can even choose to take 2 to 5 minutes off so your brain can “reset” and be able to focus again.
5. Catch up with Coworkers and Important Clients
After you are back at the office, the first good move to start with is to speak with your boss and coworkers and let them know what you are working on. Talk to them to get a broad sense of what went down while you were away and where new projects or campaigns stand at the current moment so that you can prioritise your tasks better. If you will have enough time, you should also connect with your best clients. By letting them know that you are back and that they can reach you if they need anything, will impress them due to your sense of professionalism.
Whatever you do, a lot to do after vacation is inevitable. But this should not make you afraid of taking a vacation next time. Accept the workload and take it one day at a time. You will be back on track and your 2019 will be successful.
