Job Summary

Reporting to the Fire Assay Coordinator/Supervisor, the Fire Assay Operator is responsible for the processing of client samples by following written procedures and safe practices. This job description does not limit the responsibilities of the incumbent and is available for amendment. The incumbent may be called upon to perform any other duties, for which he/she is deemed competent, as required due to workflow in the laboratory and/or as instructed by line management.

Job Description/Requirements

The position will require shift work and reasonable overtime as determined by the requirements of the operations.


- Carry out fire assay procedures in accordance with documented SOP’s or recognized standard reference methods.

- Report any deviation from documented procedures to the Fire Assay Coordinator and that approval is obtained prior to reporting any analytical result.

- Inform the Fire Assay Coordinator of any non-conforming event related to customer samples, analytical testing or other laboratory operations.

- Inform the Fire Assay Coordinator of any unsafe conditions in the department.

- Act in a safe and professional manner and wear appropriate attire including the required personal protective equipment (PPE).

- Ensure proper functioning of fire assay operations by:

  • Monitoring the performance of the instruments.
  • Ensuring adequate inventory of laboratory consumable supplies and chemicals.
  • Practicing good housekeeping.

- Communicate general laboratory issues to the fire assay Coordinator as appropriate.

- Perform other duties as required by management.

- Submit to testing for lead exposure on a regular basis.

EDUCATION: Technical Diploma or equivalent experience

EXPERIENCE: 0-3 years experience in a commercial laboratory.


  • Able to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in English.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to multitask.
  • Detail orientated and ability to work very well under pressure.
  •  Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

SUBSTITUTIONS: Fire Assay Coordinator.


- Quality of prills produced

- Equipment downtime due to failure to adhere to maintenance schedules

- Any non-conformances due to failure to follow company policies and procedures


1. Quality Control and Safety Management

Key Responsibility:

  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety procedures under supervision
  • Adhere to Quality Control procedures under supervision
  • Perform basic function related to sample prep tasks using the LIMS system (Login and sample layout)
  • Perform sample sorting, drying, weighing, crushing, splitting, milling, sieving and other routine procedures as instructed by coordinator
  • Ensure customer expectations are met/ exceeded
  • Ensure the appropriate use of laboratory materials and equipment

Key Performance Indicator:

  • Zero workplace accidents/incidents
  • Hazards identified and reported; accidents eliminated
  • Adherence to housekeeping standards
  • Attendance of toolbox/ safety meetings
  • No. of non-conformances, customer queries or complaints due to failure to adhere to all relevant company procedures and policies regarding quality requirements
  • Daily checks performed

2. Operations

Key Responsibility:

  • Perform basic function related to sample prep tasks using the LIMS system (Login and sample layout)
  • Ensure customer expectations are met/ exceeded
  • Ensure the appropriate use of laboratory materials and equipment

Key Performance Indicator:

  • No delayed or missing jobs due to failure to perform routine procedure
  • No. of non-conformances, customer queries or complaints due to failure to adhere to all relevant operational and quality procedures
  • Meet daily production targets
  • No downtime due to failure to perform first line routine maintenance, failure to report equipment breakdowns, failure to report decrease in consumables used.
  • No reports of consumable wastage
